Our commitment. Deal's Aid wants everyone to be able to use dealsaid.org and our free courses, including people who use screen readers, keyboards, magnification or other assistive technology. If anything on the site is hard for you to use, tell us and we'll fix it or get you the information another way.
Our goal
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA, the widely used international standard for accessible websites. We believe the site partially meets this standard: most of it works well, and the gaps we know about are listed below.
What we've done
- Keyboard access: menus, tabs, buttons, forms, the photo gallery and course quizzes and games can all be used with a keyboard. Press Tab to move and Enter or Space to choose. In the photo viewer, the arrow keys move between photos and Esc closes it.
- Screen readers: images have text descriptions, buttons have clear labels, and quiz and form results are announced.
- Colour contrast: text colours are checked against the WCAG contrast standard.
- Reduced motion: if your device is set to reduce motion, the animations, swimming fish and moving robots are switched off and everything appears in its finished state.
- Readable fonts: the course site uses Atkinson Hyperlegible, a font designed for readers with low vision.
- Videos: the Gallery videos have no speech, only natural underwater sound, so they don't need captions. Each one has a written description shown under it in the viewer and read out by screen readers.
- Zoom and phones: pages reflow to fit small screens and can be zoomed without losing content.
- Testing: we check pages with the axe-core accessibility checker and by using them with a keyboard only.
Known limitations
- The proof-of-age upload for the giveaway uses a Google Form, which we don't control. If it gives you trouble, email us and we'll take your document another way.
- Linked posts on Instagram and Facebook follow those sites' own accessibility.
- The swimming fish you can click on the dive site are decoration only. Their facts aren't available to keyboard or screen reader users.
